Movie Day

I took McKenna to the movies the other day and although this was not her first movie in a real movie theater, it was the first time that I had taken her to see a movie.  It’s still new enough to me that I get excited about these things and marvel at her good behavior.  I’ve taken her to a few live performances in the past (Laurie Berkner, Backyardigans, and the Nutcracker), but I considered that it might be a little more difficult to hold a two year old’s attention for 2 hours with a movie .  Part of me was expecting one of those catastrophic meltdowns.  You know, one of those uncomfortable scenes where the tension builds and builds until finally you forget the $15 you just spent on the movie, and you quickly excuse yourself before the other movie patrons organize a lynch mob to get you and your kid.  My fears were not based in fact, but nonetheless they were there.

Monsters vs. Aliens

Monsters vs. Aliens

No such excitement.  She did great.  She was quiet as a church mouse and just sat there all “big girl like” snacking on her popcorn and following the movie.  We saw Monsters vs. Aliens.  I know that the movie has not received the best reviews, but I actually liked it.  It might have been a little cookie cutter piece of Hollywood fluff, but what the heck do you want from a kid’s movie.  Friends of ours raised objections to the movie because there were guns and explosions and stuff.  I wonder if perhaps we’re too sensitive about that stuff nowadays.  I saw the original (non-Politically Correct) version of ET in 1982 when I was 10 years old and I survived.

I was more impressed that the lead character Susan was the hero of the movie.  She wasn’t saved.  She did the saving, and when she figured out that her fiance was a narcisistic dweeb, she kicked him to the curb.  Good to see.
Anyway, today’s movie outing was more about getting to hang out one-on-one with my big girl.  She has to share our attention with Aubrey most of the time and she does a reasonably good job of keeping the jealousy under wraps.  Perhaps the most amazing part of the day came after the movie.  We went to the Tower Theater in South Hadley and after the movie we stopped in the Odyssey Bookshop.  McKenna browsed for a while before settling on a Toot and Puddle book.  Then McKenna she said to me, “We have to get one for baby Aubrey too.”
I guess the next time she’s being a little pin head, I’ll have to remember this and cut her some slack.

Dear President Obama

The following is a true story. No embellishment.

Last night we were sitting at the dinner table and talking about whatever when McKenna chimed in with what she wanted to do after dinner.

“I want to color,” she said.
I said, “Oh yeah, what do you want to color?”
She replied, “I want to color an Easter picture for Barack Obama.”
With a small amount of surprise I said, “Really?”
“Yup. I want to color a squirrel for him. Can we send it to him?”
“OK. If you do a good job eating your dinner, you can do a coloring for President Obama and I promise I will mail it to him.”
As if to underline the importance she said, “Barack Obama is the 44th president.”

After dinner she sat down and colored a picture to send to our president.

During bath time she was still talking about it. I could hear her asking my wife if President Obama would hang it on his refrigerator.

So, like a dutiful father I wrote a quick little letter for the enclosed piece of art and mailed it off this morning.

I hope he (or at least a staffer) enjoys it. I know McKenna did.

Jack Black on Yo Gabba Gabba

Last year my wife and I were flipping through the channels and we came across this new show on Noggin called Yo Gabba Gabba. We watched it and I remember thinking at the time - “This is what happens when kids at raves get pregnant and suddenly decide that it would be a good idea to make a newer, hipper version of Sesame Street for their baby.” I’m serious. I watched it and I could have sworn that I recognized DJ Lance from a rave that I went to back in 1995 when I was living in San Diego. Tell me you can’t picture him dancing way too fast with a whistle in his mouth and a glow stick in each hand.

But the point is that we watched the whole episode. I can still remember the main song - Yeah, there’s a party in my tummy.”

So, fast-forward to Friday night. Noggin has been advertising for weeks now that Jack Black was coming on the show. We set our DVR to capture it, you know, just in case we were out or something. It was almost like being a kid again, waiting for the Michael Jackson Thriller video premiere on Mtv (remember when Mtv played videos?).

I won’t even pretend that I haven’t completely lost it. But I’m too far gone to even care anymore. DJ Lance is da bomb, and I’ve got just the physique to pull off the orange jumpsuit for halloween this year. You wait.

Anyway, for those of you who missed it, here’s a little preview.
