Daddy’s way for me usually involves improvising when the car seat is in the wrong car and we have a short trip to make. That means the 2 year old sits way in the back of the car, with a seat belt on, and next to an older sibling. A little law-breaking to get to where you need to go is forgivable.

What’s funny is that they’re sexist on both fronts. They don’t believe that a father can care for a child and they assume that the mother is stay at home while the father brings home the bacon.

That same thing happens to me when I take my kids to the doctor. On one appointment it was painful because the nurse in effect refused to schedule a new appointment with me. She just continued to ask me to have my wife call. And when I said I could do it, she would make up some other excuse why she couldn’t schedule it then and say that my wife should call later.

Infuriating.

But being instructed how to hold your own child to console her? That takes the cake.

Welcome Andrew. Thanks for the feedback. I maintain two blogs. This one on parenting, and another one http://www.RunFasterDaddy.com about my triathlon and marathon training. Of course my life is not so neatly compartmentalized so there tends to be some overlap.

I’m still trying to build momentum on this site. If you don’t mind me asking, how did you stumble upon my site?

Your daughter does have good taste in music but I’m sure she is exposed to it by her parents. My 7 year old loved the Flobots song “Handlebars” last year when she was learning to ride her bike without training wheels. We would sing that to her at every attempt.
As far as your doctor’s visit. The nurses sometimes treat Mothers with the same stupidity too but I am sure not as often. I had a nurse tell me my baby was hungry and needed to eat right away. She was my second born and I was well aware of her eating habits.
I just stumbled onto your blog. As a mom of 2 girls I look forward to reading more.

Right on Dude! I don’t have kids but when I was taking care of my 6 week old nephew I went over my mother-in-law’s house to visit. The little peanut needed to get changed and when I went to change her diaper her comment was “men don’t know how to change diapers” I was tempted to throw the dirty diaper but I held back. Having testicles is NOT a handicap!
